Russia Condemns Israeli Settler Attack on Diplomatic Vehicle in West Bank

On August 5, 2025, Russia lodged a formal complaint with Israel after Israeli settlers attacked a Russian diplomatic vehicle near the illegal Giv’at Asaf settlement in the occupied West Bank. The attack, which took place on July 30, 2025, raised serious concerns about the safety of foreign diplomats and the complicity of Israeli security forces in settler violence.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the assault as a gross violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), emphasizing the failure of Israeli military personnel to intervene despite their presence at the scene. According to Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Ministry, the vehicle, which belonged to Russia’s representation to the Palestinian Authority (PA), was attacked by a group of Israeli settlers. The vehicle suffered significant damage, and the diplomats inside were subjected to verbal threats.

Israeli Military Inaction and Growing Concerns Over Settler Violence

The attack has further exacerbated tensions in the occupied West Bank, where violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and security forces has been on the rise. The UN reported a sharp increase in settler violence, with over 2,200 casualties in 2024-2025 alone, including 1,029 children. The Russian Embassy in Tel Aviv has already raised the issue through diplomatic channels, calling for accountability and greater protection for foreign diplomats working in the region.

Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, condemned the actions during a Security Council session, stating that the attack highlighted the broader issue of Israel’s policy in the Palestinian territories. He criticized Israel’s “lenient approach” towards settler violence and described the ongoing policies as a “systematic effort to exile Palestinians”.

The Context of Israeli Settler Attacks in the West Bank

Since October 2023, the occupied West Bank has seen an uptick in settler attacks and military operations. This has led to significant casualties among Palestinians, with thousands injured and killed. While these incidents have drawn international criticism, the Israeli government’s policies have sparked concerns about the long-term stability of the region.

In the wake of this attack, Russia has also warned that Israel’s policies in the West Bank could escalate tensions and potentially destabilize the region further, leading to more conflict and loss of life. The situation remains precarious as Israeli military presence and settler expansion continue to encroach on Palestinian territories, leading to an increasingly violent environment.

As the situation unfolds, Russia has reiterated its commitment to standing up against the continued expansion of illegal settlements and has called for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the issue of settler violence.

This incident underscores the growing tension in the Middle East and highlights the international community’s concern regarding the ongoing violence in the West Bank.
