The Ham Group of Companies: Uganda’s Leading Industrial Conglomerate

3 mins read

The Ham Group of Companies Uganda is a diversified multinational industrial conglomerate, renowned as one of East Africa’s largest privately owned business empires. Founded by Dr. Hamis Kiggundu, the group has established a dominant presence across multiple sectors, employing over 7,000 people and driving economic growth in Uganda and beyond. Its official headquarters, known as The White House, serves as the nerve center for its expansive operations.

Origins and History

Founded in 2005, the Ham Group began as a modest garment trading business, reflecting Dr. Kiggundu’s early entrepreneurial spirit. Growing up in a business-oriented family, Hamis learned the basics of commerce by assisting his father, Hajji Segawa, in a textile shop. Utilizing capital provided by his father during school holidays, Hamis started his own small venture, laying the foundation for what would become a diversified conglomerate.

Recognizing opportunities in real estate, he gradually transitioned into buying and selling land and properties. In 2009, he established Ham Enterprises (U) Ltd, marking the beginning of large-scale property development. The company’s first landmark project was Ham Towers, completed in 2010 in Kampala. This was quickly followed by the development of Ham Shopping Mall, completed within 18 months, which not only boosted rental income but also enhanced the group’s creditworthiness for securing additional financing from banks.

By 2021, the Ham Group had expanded into industrialization, particularly agro-processing, aimed at adding value to Uganda’s agricultural produce. A key project in this strategy was the US$156 million Integrated Agro-Processing Industrial Plant (IAIP) at Akright City. The facility represents the conglomerate’s commitment to industrial growth and employment generation in the region.
