Sierra Leone AI Initiative
Sierra Leone has taken a bold step toward digital transformation by launching its first AI readiness assessment with support from the World Bank. The initiative, one of the first of its kind globally, aims to ensure that artificial intelligence is applied responsibly and purposefully to address the country’s most urgent development challenges.
The Ministry of Communication, Technology and Innovation, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Digital Transformation Project, presented initial findings in Freetown. The event brought together government leaders, civil society, academia, and private sector representatives for a national dialogue on the role of AI in the country’s future.
Goals of the Sierra Leone AI Readiness Assessment
The Sierra Leone AI assessment evaluates the nation’s preparedness across three critical pillars:
- Compute – the infrastructure needed to support AI-driven systems.
- Capacity – the skills, training, and talent required to build and use AI responsibly.
- Context – the regulatory and policy environment that ensures safe and ethical adoption.
By analyzing these areas, the project will guide the development of Sierra Leone’s forthcoming National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, shaping how AI can support sectors such as healthcare, education, and governance.
A Regional Leader in Ethical AI
Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, emphasized that the country’s approach is solution-oriented. “We are not asking how to fit AI into our systems; we are asking which national challenges AI can help us solve today,” she explained.
By positioning itself as a pioneer in Sierra Leone AI adoption, the country seeks to become a regional leader in ethical and inclusive technology use. With the support of the World Bank, Sierra Leone is ensuring that AI strengthens public services, enhances governance, and empowers its citizens in a responsible way.
The readiness assessment represents a major milestone in Africa’s digital journey, proving that smaller nations can lead the way in shaping global AI adoption frameworks tailored to local priorities.
